NAMM Foundation Best Communities for Music Education

The Binghamton City School District is proud to announce that it has been recognized as one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation for 2025!

“A heartfelt thank you to all our dedicated educators. This recognition highlights our district’s strong commitment to excellence through music education,” said BCSD Fine Arts Department Chair Ariana Koniuto. “It reflects the unwavering dedication of our exceptional educators and the love for music they foster in their students. Music plays a vital role in enriching the educational experience, and we are proud to celebrate the collective contributions that make it such an important part of our schools.”

This national award honors school districts that are committed to keeping music education strong and accessible for all students. Binghamton is one of a select number of districts across the country to receive this distinction—and it’s a testament to the incredible work happening in our schools every day.

The NAMM Foundation’s Best Communities for Music Education list is based on a detailed application process that looks at everything from music curriculum and teacher qualifications to community support and student participation. Binghamton stood out for its well-rounded and inclusive programs that reach students from elementary school through high school.

Whether it’s the excitement of a beginner picking up an instrument for the first time, the energy of a middle school band concert, or the polished performances of high school ensembles, music is a vibrant part of the Binghamton student experience.

"This designation reflects our music teachers' commitment to our students and passion for providing their education with music experiences every day,” said Dr. Tonia Thompson, Binghamton City School District Superintendent. “From instrument instruction beginning in third grade, advanced high school musical ensembles, and everything in between, the Binghamton City School District offers the highest-quality and widest-reaching musical instruction in our area. We thank the NAMM Foundation for this honor and celebrate our music staff for them being examples of the importance of music in our schools."
