Throughout the month of February, the Binghamton City School District is honoring the legacy of Black Americans. As part of the District’s celebration of Black History Month, students of color from Binghamton High School are sitting down with notable Black alumni to discuss their journeys since their days at BHS.
This week, Binghamton senior Zubayr Griffin spoke with BHS Class of 1987 graduate King Rice. Rice is the Head Coach of the Monmouth University Men’s Basketball team. He’s well-known in the Binghamton area as a standout player on the Binghamton High School team that won the 1985 & 1986 New York State Championships. After graduation, Rice played at the NCAA Division I level for the North Carolina Tarheels.
Coach Rice spoke with Zubayr about what it took to be successful on the basketball court and in the classroom. The two also discussed the challenges Rice faced as a young adult in college, the lessons he learned along the way, and what advice he’d offer to current Binghamton students.
