Xaneya Thomas

When Xaneya Thomas graduated from Binghamton High School in 2020, the world was anything but ordinary. That year’s ceremony, held outside the school stadium due to COVID-19, ended with fireworks lighting up the night sky—a moment that was the perfect sendoff. It reflected what was to come: a journey that’s been full of resilience and determination.

After graduation, Xaneya attended Medaille University, where she balanced her studies in criminal justice with playing college basketball. She later transferred to Buffalo State to finish her degree and then enrolled at the University at Buffalo School of Law. She just wrapped up her first year and already has her sights set on a future in civil litigation, with a particular interest in personal injury and tort law.

But for Xaneya, becoming a lawyer is about more than building a career. “I really want to help people who normally wouldn’t be able to afford legal support,” she said. “Doing pro bono work is definitely something I see in my future.”

Her desire to support others stems from her time at Binghamton High School. She recalls being part of a wide range of activities—basketball games, music performances, and special events like graduation—that shaped her into who she is today. A big part of that experience, she says, came from her involvement with the Liberty Partnerships Program.

“Liberty was always there,” she said. “Whether your day was good or bad, it was a place you could count on for support. That really meant something to me.”

That connection to Liberty stuck with her. In 2024, she decided to give back in a way that would help others find their own voice. She created the Xáneya Thomas Future Leaders Scholarship, aimed at graduating Liberty students who are committed to leadership, community service, and social justice. This past June, the first recipient—BHS senior Alexea Oliveri—was honored at a special ceremony.

“To me, the scholarship is about more than recognition,” Xaneya said. “It’s about encouraging young people to step up and lead with purpose.”

As she continues her law studies, Xaneya is still grounded by the values and community that helped shape her. Whether she’s in a classroom, a courtroom, or mentoring others, her focus remains the same: making a difference.
