Maria Mustafa

A Binghamton High School student is one of 62 students across the state chosen to make an impact by working with New York State Governor Kathy Hochul and other state lawmakers.

BHS senior Maria Mustafa was selected to represent Broome County on the New York State Governor's Youth Council. The group involves student leaders from across the state to advise Gov. Hochul and other lawmakers on key issues young people face and how to solve them. One young person from each New York State County between the ages of 13 and 21 were selected.

"It’s incredibly exciting to represent Broome County on such a prominent stage.," Maria says. "This opportunity fuels my ambition, especially as I aspire to become the mayor of Binghamton one day. Engaging at the state level will not only enrich my understanding but also equip me with the experience to make a meaningful impact in my community."

Maria applied for consideration through the Broome County Youth Bureau, who narrowed the selection down to three candidates. The state then decided which of the three candidates would represent Broome County.

Congratulations Maria!
